How does Klahan9 work?
Klahan9 has captured the attention of nearly every Cambodian youth, offering a unique blend of entertainment and educational content that resonates with their aspirations.
As part of a BBC Media Action Cambodia project, “Klahan9” was established in 2015 to empower Cambodian youth with skills in employment, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy, while also encouraging positive social change. BBC Media Action Cambodia is also known for producing popular shows like ‘Loy9,’ which focuses on civic education for young people, and ‘Love9,’ a sexual health awareness campaign.
The name “Klahan9” means “Brave9” in English. The number 9 was chosen because it was a trendy, cool concept at the time. This theme has been central to supporting young Cambodians in achieving their dreams. According to a 2020 national study, over 53% of youth aged 15–24 recognize the project, and more than 90% regard it as a trusted brand.

In what way does Klahan9 works?
After operating under the names Loy9 and Love9, Klahan9 has shifted its focus to a distinctive social media strategy. Following the end of the Love9 phase, Mr. Mao Chansokkosal, Outreach Manager for BBC Media Action Cambodia, highlighted a growing audience preference for accessing the program on social media rather than television.
During the Love9 phase, we started using social media as an additional platform for the first time. With over 900,000 followers on Love9’s Facebook page, social media became an essential part of our outreach strategy,” explained Mr. Mao Chansokkosal in an exclusive interview.

Love9 marked an important milestone as it was the first-ever project to use social media in its audience outreach strategies. Following the launch on February 20, 2015, Love9’s Facebook page attracted significant interaction and engagement from young audiences. “Our Klahan9 project was created following thorough studies into the issues facing youth in Cambodia. We found that many high school graduates are unsure about their career paths and often end up selecting majors and jobs that are unrelated to their intended career paths. Our mission is to create content that addresses these issues and provides inspiration,” said Mr. Mao Chansokkosal.
BBC Media Action Cambodia distinguishes itself from many current creators by conducting research, investigations, surveys, and content development, rather than simply jumping on online trends.
Throughout the Klahan9 phase, they enhanced their social media presence to effectively interact with the Klahan9 Facebook community. Facebook is used as a platform to inform, educate, and entertain the page’s followers. Their content is delivered through a variety of engaging formats, such as short and long videos, infographics, and live broadcasts. Their activity on this platform is notable, with daily posts that garner significant engagement through likes, comments, discussions, and shares on various topics.
In 2017, they introduced Instagram as an additional social media platform. They adopted a different approach from Facebook, focusing on visual posters and short videos, called “Reels,” as well as sharing content through Instagram Stories. While they post often on Instagram, yet their engagement appears to be lower compared to Facebook.
Launched in 2015, the YouTube channel has been publishing a variety of long-form content, including interviews, podcasts, mini-documentaries, and series. Its main goal is to archive these long-form series and content digitally. In 2022, the YouTube channel released well-known series like “SokSan Family,” “Love9,” and “Loy9,” which gained a lot of views and sparked discussions in the comments. The moral lessons from these series really resonated with the audience, leading to thoughtful conversations and deeper engagement with the content.
Klahan9 ran its own website until 2021, but as more young people turned to social media, it became clear that social media was the better way to reach the audience. “Young people are increasingly drawn to social media platforms over traditional websites,” said Mr. MAM Vibol, BBC Media Action’s Media Support and Training Manager. In light of this, Klahan9 decided to close its website and focus more on social media, which aligns better with their goal of connecting with young people.

Along with its social media efforts, Klahan9 reaches out physically by holding workshops in rural areas to assist young people in exploring career options and acquiring valuable skills.

What is happening to Klahan9 now?
In 2021, Klahan9 became Klahan9 SPACE (Stimulating Participation and Civic Engagement), shifting its focus to empowering Cambodian youth through life skills and community-driven content. By 2024, it had reached 2.4 million Cambodians, with 43% engaging via social media. This shift significantly influenced youth participation and career development, as reported on its 25th anniversary.
